Our Research
The Reproductive Mental Health Research Unit studies how reproductive hormones and reproductive life events influence mental health, with the goal of improving the identification, prevention, and treatment of reproductive mental health conditions. Our research focuses on three major areas:
Premenstrual Mood Disorders
We study premenstrual mood disorders, including premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), with a particular focus on understanding why some individuals are more sensitive to normal changes in ovarian hormones. We also develop and evaluate tools and interventions to improve the assessment and treatment of premenstrual mood symptoms.
Menopause and Mental Health
Our research examines why the menopause transition is a period of increased vulnerability to depression for some women. We are particularly interested in individual differences in sensitivity to changing ovarian hormones, how hormonal sensitivity interacts with stress and other factors, and how this knowledge can be used to improve prevention and treatment.
Infertility and Mental Health
We study the psychological impact of infertility and fertility treatment and develop evidence-based interventions to support people experiencing infertility. Our work also focuses on translating effective interventions into real-world fertility care so that more people can access mental health support when they need it.
From Research to Practice
Across all of these areas, we aim to translate research into practical improvements in care. We work with patients, healthcare providers, community organizations, and other partners to develop accessible, evidence-based tools and interventions that can improve reproductive mental health.
